It looks like we WILL get this storm, the question is how much! So far my predictions call for rain starting late riday and lasting through the day on Saturday, the rain could be heavy at times with local flooding of low areas. The wind picks up towards Saturday evening with gusts around 40mph.

As Gustav makes landfall we need to continue to watch Hanna. The following is the 2:00pm update as of Monday 9/01/08….

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/…
HAVE NOT CHANGED MUCH TONIGHT WITH REGARDS TO HANNA AS STRENGTH
AND POSITION ARE STILL IN QUESTION…BUT HPC IS STILL GOING
SLOWER THAN THE GFS AND ECMWF. LATEST TPC TRACK BRINGS HANNA INTO
THE SOUTH CAROLINA/GEORGIA BORDER ON FRI. MEAN UPPER TROUGH/COLD
FRONT APPROACHING FROM THE PLAINS LOOKS LIKE IT WILL PICK HANNA
UP…AND TURN ITS TRACK TO THE NE…BUT THE SPREAD AMONGST THE
MODELS WITH REGARDS TO RECURVATURE AND TIMING IS RATHER LARGE.

WILL CARRY CHANCE POPS IN THE FCST FRI-SUN BASED ON THE
UNCERTAINTY OF THE TRACK/POSITION/STRENGTH OF HANNA. WILL CARRY
20-25 MPH WINDS WITH GUSTS UP TO 30 MPH OVER NEXT WEEKEND.

The Tropics Are Getting Interesting

Current TD-8 Prediction

With “Gustav” still spinning and intensifying towards the Gulf another storm currently named TD-8 is getting fired up in an interesting location. TD-8 appears to have some favorable conditions to become a hurricane in the not too distant future and it has its eyes on the East Coast. While it is far to early to know where this storm will go and how it will eventually grow it is worth watching. In the meantime the Hurricane center is starting to change its predictions concerning Gustav, it appears the storm may become a Cat-3 by the time it reaches land fall, which may be in the early Tuesday time frame. Local Police Warn of Scam

Branford Police have received several complaints regarding a telephone scam that has been occurring in town. The scam is usually targeted at Senior Citizens. The scam artist calls up the victim pretending to be the victim’s grandchild. There are several versions of this scam, usually the scam artist will explain that he/she is in duress and either has been injured or sent to jail. The scam artist will then ask the victim to send money to help. Many times the scam artist will claim to be in a different country such as Mexico or Canada on vacation. The victim of the scam will then send the money, through Western Union or wired to a specific bank account, believing that they are helping a family member in need. Later on, the victim discovers that in fact the individual they sent money to is not a relative.

Branford Police began investigating these types of SCAMS in the early part of 2008 (about 3-4 complaints) and now the SCAMS have began to occur again (another 3-4 complaints)

Another Wild Day Ahead?

In what seems like an endless pelting of strong storms we are “ripe” for another round later today. Keep an eye on the sky today and take cover in a safe place, some of the storms will reach the severe levels. We dodged a bullet in the Branford area this past week however the Bridgeport and Milford areas were not so lucky. Not only did the storms come in with a vengeance, do some serious damage but worst of all they lingered for a long period of time.

Here is what the NWS says about today’s potential…”WHILE CONFIDENCE IS VERY HIGH WITH RESPECT TO THUNDERSTORMS
OVERSPREADING THE AREA…SOME OF THE DETAILS ARE QUITE
CHALLENGING. FIRST IS THE PROSPECT FOR SEVERE WEATHER
(HAIL/WIND/TORNADOES). THE BEST DYNAMICS FOR SVR ACTUALLY COME
AFTER THIS PERIOD. NONETHELESS…STRONG MICROBURST WINDS A
POSSIBILITY TODAY WITH LOW LEVEL DRY AIR IN PLACE (INVERTED V
SOUNDINGS) ALTHOUGH LARGE HAIL NOT OUT OF THE QUESTION WITH MID-
LEVEL SHEAR INCREASING TO 30-40 KTS.”

“CodeRed” aka Backward 911 comes to Branford

The Town of Branford recently purchased a backward 911 system that is capable of calling the vast majority of residents in time of emergency. Detailed instructions can be given to residents about expected storms or emergencies such as fires, hazardous materials incidents or missing persons. The fire department put this system to use this past weekend notifying residents in a specific area of Town about a hazardous materials situation. The system reached 97% of the intended residents who were told to remain in their homes and that the Fire Department was working on the situation.

Town residents can sign up with additional cell phone numbers and even e-mail so that they can be notified of a situation in their neighborhood even when away from home. An accident involving a pedestrian has been reported on North Main St. near the intersection of Route-1. At this time Route-1 has been closed, seek an alternate route.

Nice Weather for the Week Ahead

The weather will be nice for this first week of August with the possibility of some rain towards the end of the week. Temps will be in the 80’s today along the shore and bottom out in the mid 60’s tonight. The UV index is high so wear that sun screen! These morning clouds should be gone shortly as the sun burns the marine layer off. Enjoy the day!

Storms ripped through the area earlier today causing power outages and some fallen trees throughout the area. Another round is currently firing up to the east so stay tuned to local reports and warnings.

Dump Truck Rollover

A fully loaded dump truck has rolled over on the corner of North Main St. and Cherry Hill Road. The load was dumped onto the road causing the closure of Cherry Hill Rd. A vehicle was also involved in the crash and there were some minor injuries reported. A utility pole was also struck which will need to be replaced. Traffic is passable in the area however crews will be working there well into the afternoon.
