BRANFORD POLICE OFFICER ASSISTS PARENTS AND DELIVERS BABY BOY ON ROADSIDE

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010 2:09pm EDT

Today, just after 3:00 a.m. this morning a motor vehicle exited I-95 southbound and dialed 911 for medical assistance.

Branford Police Officers Brian McGinnis and Philip Ramey immediately located the vehicle and found a pregnant woman and her husband on the entrance ramp. The officers learned that the couple was enroute to the hospital where the woman was hopeful of delivering her second child. That desire was unfortunately not going to come to fruition as the mother told officers that she felt that the child was coming sooner than expected.

Fortunately for the couple, Officer McGinnis was an experience Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and maintains his skills as an ambulance attendant for American Medical Response. With the help of Officer Ramey, McGinnis assisted the mother delivering the baby boy at 03:12 hrs.

Within moments, Branford Fire Department Paramedics Paul Cipriani and Dan Kunze arrived and continued with medical treatment of the baby and mother. Both were eventually transported to Yale New Haven Hospital for further evaluation.

“I would like to congratulate the parents and on the birth of their baby boy” said Chief John DeCarlo. “I hope that the boy and his family enjoy a healthy and happy life.”

Spring Ahead this Weekend

Thursday, March 11th, 2010 1:02pm EDT

This weekend we change the clocks, a perfect time to check your smoke detector and CO (carbon monoxide) detector. According to the National Fire Protection Association, more than 66 percent of home fire deaths that occurred between 2003-2006 were in homes without a working smoke alarm. A working smoke alarm significantly increases your chances of surviving a deadly home fire.

The Install. Inspect. Protect. Campaign is part of the U.S. Fire Administration’s effort to reduce fire deaths and injuries across the nation by urging residents to install smoke alarms in their homes and inspect and maintain them on a regular basis. Working smoke alarms and sprinklers save lives.

A working smoke alarm can help you and your family escape a deadly home fire. It can also help save the lives of firefighters who would otherwise have to risk their lives by searching a burning home for residents. A working smoke alarm continuously scans the air for smoke, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It never sleeps.

The USFA is encouraging you to practice fire safety and do your part to get out, before firefighters have to come in.

BRANFORD POLICE ARREST MAN ON ARMED ROBBERY CHARGES

Branford Police officers responded to a complaint of a man robbed at knife point just after midnight on Sunday morning. The victim told police that he was walking home, carrying an XBOX in a canvass bag from a friend’s house in East Haven. When he was near Brothers Harley Davidson on West Main Street he was approached by a black male on a bicycle. The black male displayed a knife and told the victim to give him the bag or he would “poke him”. The victim surrendered the bag and the suspect fled, heading west on West Main Street. The victim was able to flag down a motorist to call 911.

The suspect, later identified as Christian O. Isaac (DOB 1/10/1990) of 343 Poplar St., New Haven, was spotted a short time later by Officer Richard Kenney on West Main Street riding a bicycle. Isaac continued to flee from P.O. Kenney on the bike and traveled off the road toward 150 West Main Street. Isaac then struck a retaining wall and toppled off the wall with the bicycle which broke into pieces.  The knife and XBOX were recovered by P.O. Kenney by the base of the wall however Isaac fled on foot into the Lake Saltonstall property and officers were unable to immediately locate him.

As police surrounded the property waiting for a police K-9 to arrive, Officers Lue Sobieraj and Rashaad Roach heard movement in the immediate area and were later able to capture and take Isaac into custody.

As a result of falling off the retaining wall, Isaac injured his arm and was transported to a hospital for treatment.

Chief John DeCarlo credits the swift capture of Isaac to the hard proactive work of the officers. “P.O. Kenney was working an extra, grant funded detail to reduce drunken drivers in the West Main Street area. Because he was in the area, he along with the other officers was able to capture this dangerous person.” DeCarlo said.

Christian Isaac was charged with Robbery First Degree, Larceny Fifth Degree, Criminal Trespass Third Degree and Interfering with an Officer.  Isaac is held on a $75000 bond.
